The Case for Removal
Carbon removal is controversial, but it's worthwhile. Here's why.
The kitchen analogy
Who leaves the kitchen in a better state: a cook who uses ten pots and pans but washes up afterward and puts them away, or someone who eats a bowl of cereal and leaves the bowl on the counter afterward?
The climate conversation has long been about making less mess in a shared kitchen: cook less and use fewer pans. That can be useful, but it has a ceiling — you can't ever get it down to zero, and counting every fork the cook uses gets exhausting for everyone.
Carbon removal is the dishwasher. It changes the question from how do we make less mess to how do we clean up the mess we make.
What's actually being proposed
Carbon removal means pulling CO₂ that's already in the atmosphere back out and storing it where it can't come back for centuries. In practice, that means injecting it underground into rock formations, reacting it with minerals to lock it permanently into stone, burying biomass deep enough that it doesn't decompose, or converting it to inert biochar in the soil.
It's not the same thing as a carbon offset. Most offsets try to avoid emissions by paying for things such as renewable energy projects or forest protection. Those might be worthwhile efforts, but it's genuinely hard to verify that purchasing an offset changes anything. Removal is more direct — a measurable tonne out of the atmosphere — and easier to know you got what you paid for.
What removal changes about the problem
For decades, the climate conversation has been organized around moral judgment. Emissions are a sin; reducing them is virtue. Flying, eating beef, and having a big house are shameful. The basic plan has been: if we criticize and shame consumption enough, people will feel guilty enough to cut back.
Carbon removal restructures the conversation in four ways:
- It turns emissions from morality into logistics. If CO₂ can be cleaned up, the question stops being “are you a good person” and becomes “did you handle your waste”. It works the way garbage does — there's a system, you're expected to use it, and nobody asks if you're a good person about it.
- It trades sacrifice for a price tag. Reducing emissions today means changing how you live: drive less, eat differently, stop traveling, buy fewer things. But there's only so much sacrifice people are willing to make. Removal puts a dollar figure on the alternatives. If you want to keep the trip, the steak, the commute — well, here's what cleanup costs. You can decide whether it's worth it.
- It creates a clearing price. Reducing emissions is sometimes cheap (a heat pump pays for itself) and sometimes astronomical (decarbonized cement or zero-carbon aviation). The price of removal tells us what is rational and efficient: any reduction that costs more than removal is unnecessary; any reduction that costs less is the obvious move. Without a market price for cleanup, that comparison can't even be made.
- It closes the excuse loop on big emitters. When climate is a moral crusade, the largest emitters — companies, countries, billionaires — shrug and say they're doing what they can. With removal commercially available, the rebuttal is straightforward: “I'm not a billionaire and I cleaned up 10% of my emissions. What's your excuse?” The honest answer is that they could do the same, and the only thing stopping them is the bill. Faced with the bill, most will choose to reduce — because reducing emissions is usually cheaper than removing carbon from the air after the fact.
That last point is the actual mechanism. The goal is not to literally capture every tonne humanity emits. The goal is to establish the norm that emissions come with a cleanup cost, the way garbage does. Once that norm is in place, people can find a balance that leaves us with a safer level of emissions.
Objections worth taking seriously
- “It's a moral hazard — a license to keep polluting.” It can be! Carbon removal is a tool, and tools can be misused. If it is used as an excuse for delaying emissions reduction or as a token effort, that can be a problem. But it can also be a tool for accountability — it can pressure polluters to look hard at the true cost of their emissions and take whichever action is appropriate (because action is now possible).
- “It's too expensive.” You are free to avoid paying for carbon removal — if you can get your emissions to zero. But if it's cheaper and easier to remove the last few tonnes of your CO₂ emissions from the air, instead, then the economics are telling you something real. So yes, carbon removal is expensive — and using it for the last, hard-to-abate emissions may still be the cheapest way to deal with them.
- “It doesn't scale.” This is certainly true for tree-planting as the main solution to carbon pollution. But there is enough geological storage for all of the CO₂ humanity has ever emitted. If there's demand for carbon removal, the market can meet that demand.
- “It doesn't work. It's greenwashing.” It can be greenwashing — if the “removal” is short-lived, unverifiable, not actually additional (e.g., a forestry project credited for trees that would have grown even without the money), or if it never actually happens at all. There have been failed removal projects. That's why quality and accountability matters: durability of storage, additionality, measurement, and often independent validation. The providers listed in the carbon removal section of the calculator should meet the bar, but do your own research. You may find better options.
- “Just plant trees.” Trees are useful — they cool cities, hold soil, support ecosystems, and yes, build some long-term soil carbon. But the storage is small per hectare, slow to accumulate, vulnerable to fire and land-use change, and competes with everything else we use land for. Forests aren't a substitute for technology-based storage.
- “Every megawatt-hour used for carbon capture could have offset dirty energy from fossil fuels instead.” Often, it couldn't have. Electricity is tied to a specific grid, time, and form — Icelandic hydropower cannot run a factory in Indiana or flight over the Atlantic, so it can't displace the fossil fuels those burn. But CO₂ mixes freely in the atmosphere: a tonne removed in Iceland offsets a tonne emitted anywhere else.
Why you can't avoid it
Even if every person on Earth stopped emitting tomorrow, the CO₂ already in the atmosphere stays there for centuries. Stopping the leak doesn't drain the bathtub. The only way to actually reduce atmospheric CO₂ — not just stop adding to it — is to take some of it back out.
There are also emissions we can't easily eliminate today. Creating cement releases CO₂ as a chemical byproduct of the reaction, not just from its fuel. Long-haul aviation has no working zero-carbon fuel at scale. Agriculture produces methane and nitrous oxide from biological processes that aren't going to stop. Even the most aggressive technical roadmaps still leave several gigatonnes a year of these hard-to-abate emissions in 2050 and beyond. The only way to net those out is to remove an equivalent amount.
Every credible scenario for staying below 1.5 °C — including all of the IPCC pathways — assumes large-scale removal.
So what should you do
Reduce first, remove the rest. Reduction is almost always cheaper than removal per tonne, so anything you can do without major disruption — heat pumps, EVs, less meat, fewer flights when alternatives work — you should. Then see what emissions you still cause and decide what's worth keeping.
The carbon removal ratio is the scorecard — one that can be compared with anyone else's ratio. It is not asking you to reduce emissions to zero; it is asking you to clean up some share of what you emit, and to keep raising that share. Most people clean up nothing. Even one percent puts you ahead of almost everyone. And once you can see the number, you can change it by working on either the numerator or the denominator.
